A PETA investigation into the Chinese badger-brush industry reveals that workers violently kill fully conscious badgers by beating them over the head with any object close to hand, including a chair leg. The animals were heard crying out before their throats were barbarically slit so that their hair could be used as bristles for brushes for painting, makeup and shaving, which are sold by a number of companies.
Badgers are intelligent social animals who might naturally travel for miles with their clan. But on ‘farms’ they are confined to tiny wire cages and endure crowding and filthy conditions.
Badgers are hunted in the wild using snares and other cruel methods, even though this practice is illegal under China’s Wildlife Protection Law. There is virtually no protection against the abuse of animals on Chinese farms.
Brushes with high quality synthetic bristles are widely available, and more and more leading companies are listening to the demand for ethical cruelty-free products.
